Photo Hike in Happy Valley

Hi Everyone,

If anyone is interested, Garry Conway, a local nature photographer is leading a photo walk this coming Saturday in Happy Valley.  Since I don't know Garry Conway personally and have never been on any of his walks, I can't guarantee what this will be like, but it does sound like fun, and there's a good chance that I'll be there.  Here are the details directly from his website:

Photo-hike in Happy Valley

Meet at the King Township Museum
Saturday, April 18, 2015 at 1 pm

The King Township Museum
(2920 King Road, King Township, Ontario)

We will leave the Museum at 1:30 pm. You will receive driving directions to the hike starting location which is about a 10 minute drive from the Museum. The photo-hike duration will be about 1 1/2 hours.

We will hike a kilometer into the beautiful hardwood forest of Happy Valley. I will provide instruction on forest and plant photography .

After the leaves have fallen in the Fall and just before they come out in the Spring is a great time to photograph forests. The forests are open and light shines through to the forest floor creating interesting highlight and shadow effects. On dull days, fog or evaporation from the forest floor can create unusual effects .  While it is still early in the season we will likely see signs of emerging woodland plants and perhaps capture one or two migrating birds.

What to bring:

APLCC News & Monthly Challenge for March 2015

Hi Everyone,

My apologies for taking so long to write to you about this month's photo challenge, but unfortunately I came down with the most miserable cold (and then Laryngitis) and have just been struggling to just make it through the day.  In any event, I'm on the mend and feeling much better.

The following video will give you a sense of what I'm looking for in this month's challenge.

Please upload a maximum of three images.  If you are having issues with the upload process please email me and I will guide you through it or help fix any problem.

Looking forward to seeing your interpretations.

Glenn Springer PowerPoint and February Monthly Challenge

Hi Everyone,

At the last meeting, we weren't able to get through Glenn Springer's entire PowerPoint presentation, so he was kind enough to make it available as a download.  It's highly recommended as it contains lots of good information as well as a really enjoyable 5 minute slideshow presentation highlighting some of Glenn's excellent images.  The PowerPoint is about 75MB and is available from the following link:

www.photography.to/presentations/onlineaurora.ppsx

If you prefer to view the PowerPoint online, it is also available, in Flash form, on the front page of the APLCC website.

Also, don't forget to sign up for Glenn Springer's blog.  It is very enjoyable and well written, and for signing up you will be entitled to a free Ebook.

FEBRUARY MONTHLY CHALLENGE

The following is the monthly challenge for February and it caters to an indoor esthetic:

Macro/Close up/Abstract/Silhouette

You can do any one of the above, or you can mix and match.  For example, you can do a close up, which is also abstract and a silhouette.  So your images can reflect any one of the above, or can be a mixture of any one of the above elements.

Have a great February!

Ronen

WINTER PHOTOGRAPHY

Now that the hardest and coldest months of the winter have descended, it is difficult for most of us to get inspired to go out and shoot, despite the fact that the winter months can yield some of the most interesting and creative images.  Here are a few links and videos to inspire your winter creativity:

APLCC January Monthly Challenge

Hi Everyone,

I just want to thank all of you who came to the December 18 meeting for making the holiday get together so successful.  Thanks to all who contributed to the snack table, it was very much appreciated.  Thank you Deborah Barley for the fun Photo Puzzle Activity.  Also, someone left behind a Cuisinart knife.  So if it belongs to you, please let me know and I'll get it to you.

Just a heads up on the Monthly Challenge for January.  Since we watched the film on Vivian Maier, this challenge is inspired by her work.

An important  thing about Vivian Maier's images is that they focus on everyday life.  Her street photography shows how fascinated she was with everyday things, (street scenes, portraits of people, interesting architecture, self-portraits, as well as random objects in the streets).  She captured the ordinary moments of day-to-day life.   As expressed by John Maloof, the director, curator, and primary caretaker of Maier's oeuvre “Vivian saw details that pass us by in everyday life.”

So the challenge for this month is "Everyday Moments" --- things that would generally pass unnoticed.

Here are some things to consider in creating an image:

APLCC Holiday Greeting

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick reminder that the APL Camera Club will be holding a holiday get together/meeting on December 18 in the Magna Room of the Aurora Public Library between 7 and 9pm.

The agenda for this meeting is simple:

  • Schmooze and mingle.
  • Brief critique of Monthly Challenge (A Winter Sight or Holiday Lights)
  • Watch film -- Finding Vivian Maier

If you can, bring a little something to snack on.  If everyone brings something small, there'll be plenty to go around.

Also, if you can find the time, upload an image or two to the Monthly Challenge Gallery.  As of this moment there aren't many images there.  Given that this is a very busy time of year, it is perfectly acceptable to upload either  recent  photographs or ones that were taken in the past.

I want to wish those of you who will not be able to make it to this month's meeting a joyous holiday season and a wonderful new year.

Hoping to see you all on Thursday.

Regards,

Ronen
