APLCC Holiday Greeting and January 28 Monthly Challenge

Hi Everyone,

I just want to wish you all a wonderful and very merry holiday season as well as a happy new year.  I'm looking forward to seeing all of you in the upcoming year (our next meeting is scheduled for January 28, 2016 by the way) to share and learn a whole lot of new things about the art of photography.

MONTHLY CHALLENGE

The next Monthly Challenge is Painting with Light Still Life or Holiday Lights.  For those of you who were not at the last meeting, where we covered the painting with light technique, or those of you who would like a refresher, I set up a blog page on the APLCC website to walk you through what you need to know.   I also posted some of the images that we took at the last meeting.  Just so you know, the Monthly Challenge Gallery is all set up to accept your images as soon as they are ready.  So go out there and make something great!  yes

Again, the best to you all during the holiday season, and I'll see you in the new year.

APLCC Monthly Challenge -- November 26, 2015

Hi Everyone,

I want to thank all the people who came out to the first APL Camera Club meeting of the season on October 29.  It was great to see you all.

NOVEMBER MONTHLY CHALLENGE

Because of time pressure at the last meeting I didn't really have a chance to fully explain the Joel Meyerowitz inspired Monthly Challenge I had in mind for November.  Consequently, I'm simplifying the challenge to remove any confusion.  As usual there are two options. They are:

  1. Old or Discarded
  2. The Elements:  Air, Earth, Fire, Water.  (You do not need to have all four elements in your images)

If you have any questions about the challenge please email me at reelstories@rogers.com

CAMERA EQUIPMENT FOR SALE

Just a reminder that Ellen, one of the people who frequents my philosophy club, has some cameras and other photographic equipment that she's looking to sell.  She's quite motivated and so I'm sure she's open to negotiate any reasonable offer.  Anyone who's interested can see a list of the items by following the link below:

http://aplcc.webhop.org/apl_camera_club/content/camera-equipment-sale

In any event, the Monthly Challenge Gallery is ready to receive your images.  Looking forward to seeing your submissions.

APL Camera Club Meeting Reminder for October 29

Hi Everyone,

In the last Newsletter, it was mentioned that the first meeting of the APL Camera Club is on September 24.  This is not the case.  In fact, the first meeting this season will be on October 29, between 7-9pm in the Lebovic Room of the Aurora Public Library.  I apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused.

CULTURE DAYS -- SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 26

On September 26 at 2:00pm in the Living Room area of the library a  few members of the club (Doug, Rick, William, Holly, and myself) will be doing a one hour Culture Days presentation on the relationship between photography and fine art.  There will be a hands-on demonstration showing how to make photographs more "artistic".  Please join us in the Aurora Public Library Living Room Area for what promises to be a lively presentation and discussion.

MONTHLY CHALLENGE

The Monthly Challenge for the October 29 meeting is Summber 2015 -- Landscapes/Fun/Bustling City.  The Monthly Challenge Gallery is ready for your images!

APL Camera Club Mid-Summer Greetings

Hello Everyone,

I hope that you're all enjoying the fine summer weather and are out there busily taking amazing photographs to share and discuss when we resume regular meetings on September 24.

Over the past month or so I've committed myself to learning how to do time lapse photography and it's been quite a ride.  I've always been interested in the time lapse aesthetic  and so I decided to dedicate a bit of time to learn how to do it properly.  I must say it's been quite a learning curve, but I think that I've overcome the most difficult roadblocks and have now developed a workflow that actually works.

One aspect of time lapse that's quite arduous is the incredible amount of time that it takes to finish a very short video.  The process requires that you go out there and shoot each individual photo and then process each photo before compiling the hundreds (sometimes thousands of photographs) into a finished video.

Over the past month I've managed to complete two time lapse videos that I'd like to share with you.  The first called Canada Day 2015 Timelapse Test (I know, not the most exciting title! indecision) was just an experiment (getting my foot in the water so to speak) and was shot on July 1st at the Newmarket Canada Day celebrations.  You can find the video here.

APLCC Monthly Challenge -- Summer 2015

Hi Everyone,

Now that the summer weather is here it's time to take out your cameras and go photo hunting.  There are countless images waiting to be snapped by you!

The "Monthly Challenge" (during the summer it's really the two month challenge laugh ) for the first meeting back on September 24, 2015 is Summer 2015 -- Landscapes/Fun/Bustling City.  This is a fairly open-ended challenge which is meant, essentially, to get all of you APLCC shooters out there clicking away.

In order to promote some interaction amongst members over the summer, I modified the Monthly Challenge Gallery to enable comments.  I also increased the number of images that you can upload to a total of 20.  When we meet again in September I'll ask people to choose their two or three favourite summer images for discussion.

In order to post comments on images, you'll need to access the members' individual Summer 2015 galleries.  You do this by going to the Monthly Challenge Gallery, and then clicking on the "Add/View Comments" option below the gallery thumbnail:

APLCC Monthly Challenge -- May 28, 2015

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick note on the Monthly Challenge for the May 28, 2015 meeting.

This month's challenge is inspired by the photography of William Eggleston.  His style is to capture everyday objects and moments.  He does not shy away from making the banalities of day-to-day life front and centre of his photographs.  So much so, in fact, that his photographs were once described as being inhabited by  "dismal figures inhabiting a commonplace world of little visual interest."  When asked to describe his photographs and his inspiration Eggleston commented that the best he can come up with is "Life Today".

So for this month's challenge you have two options:  "Life Today" and "Banal and Ordinary".

Here's a link to the PowerPoint presentation from last month's meeting with more information and some photographs by William Eggleston.

Here's a link to an excerpt from the film William Eggleston: Photographer on Vimeo...

Here's a YouTube Video (The Art of Photography) discussing Eggleston's aesthetic and use of colour.

The Monthly Challenge Gallery is ready for your Eggleston-inspired "Everyday Life" and "Banal and Ordinary" images.  Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
