Next APLCC Meeting -- December 18

Just a quick reminder that the next APL Camera Club will be held on December 18 instead of the last Thursday of the month.

This meeting will be more of a holiday celebration.  We’ll take some time to chat so we can get to know each other a little better.  Everyone is invited to bring a little something to snack on (thanks to all of you who've already signed up to bring something).  Remember, you don't have to bring a lot since we don't want to have stuff left over.

Here's the plan for the evening:

  • Casual conversation -- 1/2 hour to 40 minutes
  • Monthly Challenge -- 20 to 25 minutes.  The monthly challenge for this month is very simple: A Winter Sight or Holiday Lights
  • For the last part of the meeting we'll watch the award-winning documentary Finding Vivian Maier

Please remember to upload an image or images to the Monthly Challenge Gallery.  Any fun winter holiday scene (A Winter Sight) or a photograph celebrating the holiday with lights (Holiday Lights) will do.  For this particular month the image(s) that you upload can be recent or from the past.

Looking forward to seeing you all on December 18.

Regards,

Ronen

With so many options, no one should have a problem finding at least one image to upload.  smiley

Evergreen Brickworks Walkabout -- August 9, 2014

Hi Everyone,

The next APL Camera Club walkabout will be to the the Evergreen Brickworks and will take place on August 9.  Here's a brief description of the site from their website:

Open year-round, Evergreen Brick Works is a community environmental centre that inspires and equips visitors to live, work and play more sustainably. Transformed from a collection of deteriorating heritage buildings into a global showcase for green design and urban sustainability, Evergreen Brick Works is both a stage and incubator for Evergreen’s programs. A dynamic public space in the heart of Toronto’s Don Valley, the site engages visitors through interactive workshops and community festivals, and offers a full suite of programs combining ecology, design, technology and the arts in a hands-on, multi-sensory educational experience. In 2010, Evergreen Brick Works was named one of the top 10 geotourism destinations in the world by National Geographic.

We will meet at 9:00 am at the usual Tim Horton's on Wellington (304 Wellington Street East), next to St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic School.  We will drive to the Brickworks from there.

This walkabout is limited to a total of  five people.  This will make it possible for us to take one car.

If you wish to attend this outing please sign up here.  This is first come, first serve.  You will not be able to sign up once the five person quotient is filled.

Summer Walkabouts 2014

Hi Everyone,

WALKABOUTS

Three walkabouts are scheduled for this summer:

The signup for the first walkabout (Kensington Market) is here.  All members interested in this outing must signup by July 5th.  It is essential to use the official signup since I need to know how many people are going to be involved a few days before the outing.

I will post signup pages for Evergreen Brick Works and Graffiti Alley after the Kensington Market walkabout.

OVER-THE-SUMMER MONTHLY CHALLENGE

There are many photographic opportunities in the summer months.  Since we won't be meeting again "officially" until October 2014 I've decided to provide a wide range of challenges, all of them summer-related.  As usual, you can upload three images, either on a single theme or from three different categories.  When uploading your images, place them under the category "Summer Fun 2014."  Here are your options:

APL Camera Club Monthly Challenge Reminder

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick reminder that the APL Camera Club will hold its last meeting for this season on May 29.

The  Monthly Challenge for the upcoming meeting is based on Edward Weston.  The challenge is to create a photograph in the style of Edward Weston where you focus on form and lines in order to capture the essence of the object.  The following are the two options for the challenge:

  • Essential Veggie...focus on form, lines, essence using a vegetable of your choice.
  • Quintessential Something...focus on form, lines, essence...except you can work with any object you want.

At this point in time only a few images have been submitted, so go out there and find an object or a vegetable (remember, Weston was very fond of peppers) to inspire your photographic creations.  Remember that you don't need to imitate Weston, but rather use his style as an inspiration for your own creation.

You can go here to get more information and to view a PowerPoint on Edward Weston's ideas.

Looking forward to seeing all your images.
