Sharing some randon photos from this year. Used the setting in Lightroom to export them and make sure the files were not greater than 1000K. Works great for any Lightroom users.

Please enjoy and critique.

Beautiful work Doug

I love these images.  You've got a good eye for composition.

I especially like the ice-covered trees and the "Hanging in There" shot.  Did you use a macro lens for that?

DougUnderwood's picture

Ronen,

Ronen,

Glad you liked them. The trees and Hillary House were from that first snowfall of the year. I ended up a bit late to work that day.

The DragonFly was one of my first shots with my 100mm F2.8 1:1 macro lens. Macro is one of my favorite forms of photography but is also the most challenging. DOF and focus is a real challenge. I ended up grabbing a Metz wireless ring flash to help with lighting and smaller apertures. Still waiting for spring to try it out.  I'm getting pretty good at stalking DragonFlys now that I know how to approach them :)

The Bee is done with a 70-210 F4 with extension tubes. Poor mans Macro.

Maybe I can do Macro tip talk one day.

I also love macro, despite

I also love macro, despite the challenge of doing it well.  The depth of field issue is definitely something that requires a fair bit of practice.  I've tried to use a macro lens on a windy day and it's practically impossible to get the right focus.  Regardless, when it works, the images can look outstanding.

You can definitely do a macro tip talk.  That's point of this club.

Beautiful Photos

I especially love the sugar shack in Shepperds Bush and the Dragonfly.  I would appreciate some advice on macro shooting as I looking to buy a 100mm macro lens.

Wonderful

Your photographs are truly wonderful - I don't have a macro lens but your dragonfly hanging in there pictures and the pollenating one definitely make me want to get one (although I should probably get used to a regular lens first!).  I also started perusing your flickr site and really liked the snowy owl and snow grass.

Thanks for your tip about exporting with lightroom, I downloaded a free trial and that is how I got my pictures to fit on here...I guess now I need to learn how to edit!

Very Nice

A number of very nice shots, Doug.

I hope you will be at the next meeting so I can find out about your technique/eqiupment for getting close-ups. How does one get a dragon fly to pose?

Love it!

My favorite is Sunset Grundy Park. The color scheme reminds me of Van Gogh's painting Starry Night. It's just beautiful...Skyline is like a professional magazine shot. Very impressive.

Moonyoung82's picture

Super fast!

I was very impressed by your uploading speed(?)
Sorry for ruining nature's arch shot by butting in.
But overall pictures look good. I especialy like Aged beauty.
I look really old in the other picture. (sigh)

Thanks for sharing though!

Moon

Thank you Moon.

LightRoom is my workflow secret. I can import, store, select, delete, set up a catalog of best, crop, adjust exposure and tone, post all to Jpeg in under 1 hour. I find it best to stay on top of my images and not get too far behind.

You did not ruin the Arch at all. In fact I composed you into the arch to give it scale and some human interest and story. Thanks for being my model.

I don't think you look old at all. I guess we are all our own worse critic when we show up in photos. This is probably why we tend to stay behind the lens :)

Doug

Doug,

Doug,

I love the photos of rusted out cars etc because when I see them at the side of the road or in a field, I don't have my camera. When I do have my camera, well, it's like Pokaroo...

Golden hour

What a beautiful scenery!

It makes me want to sip a cup of tea and sit around it.

Good work :)

Old House

Hi Doug

That is the one that Ronen took a few pictures as well of I have Lived in that house We had some wild parties on that property with wrecking derbies out back we raised chickens and pigs and had a few horses it was a great time Your picture showed it in full view that rang the bell in the memory banks.. There was a lot more to the place then there was abit more to the house and a garage converted to living quartes and a full barn and the driving shed is still there as is the chicken coup, and if You follow the lane further down there is a house and a windmill back there and as well there was a barn back there as well and piggs were raised there as well and they were feed scraps from the bakery I worked at Grannys Butter tarts they got good and fat on that stuff I am going back a few years on this memory.

Thanks

Rick

Old House

Rick,

That is so cool that you have a history in that house.

Well I took the shots I was wondering who lived here and how all the memories are lost in time. It is refreshing to hear that it is not all forgotten and you are able to fill in some of the blanks. The derby sounds pretty cool. Bet you wished you had the 5D back then.

Man in the Moon

Hello Doug

Are You going out to observe this Event tonight? Funny this only being made a big deal of in the past few years perhaps it is because of the proliferation of recording devices in these here Modern Times.

Do You have a place that You are planning on meeting the moon?

Cheers!!!

Rick

Joanne D's picture

Great super moon!

I was only able to catch it on my cell phone and the camera is not so good, so great to see it up close and personal!

Moon Shot

Thanks Rick, Joanne and moon.

Moon I was surprised you didn't shoot the Moon :) It would have been cool to see "Moon by Moon" or Moon to the power of two.

This was my third attempt at shooting the moon and I am getting better as I progress up with Lens power. This was at 500mm and a two times teleconverter.

The other trick was using the zoom in on live view to get better focus.

Occupy Toronto

There was that picture from the Vietnam conflict with a woman holding out a flower to all the soldiers with their bayonets. In occupy Toronto, you've got a guy with a clipboard and a few police officers that look like they would rather be betting on horses or washing their cars. Is that Canadian? Maybe he should have tried giving them Tim Horton's! Or maybe the clipboard is a map to the nearest coffee shop.

Occupy Toronto

David,

It was pretty funny to watch as he argued his point and the officers just wanted them out of the park. They were so uninterested in what he had to say. I think some Tim Hortons would have helped make his point.

Kingfisher...

Hi Doug,

You're under selling yourself.  The image is actually pretty clear.  Was the shot hand held or on a tripod?

Ronen

DougUnderwood's picture

Kingfisher...

Ronen,

It was hand held on my new Sigma 150-500mm which is a beast (4 Lbs)  but now I'm getting used to the logistics of working with it. Interesting it has stabilization in the lens and I have stabilization in the body. Seems to work OK with both on.

The Bird was way out there around a third of the way. They are very skittish but I met a photographer who said it came in close once for a few moments. It was diving as it fed which would be great to capture one day.

The Masked Avenger

Hello Doug

First I am with Ronen on the Kingfisher image, second I see You are keeping up With Rhodri with a close up of a Swallow Very nice! and I see that the 2x converter is working well.

Rick

The Masked Avenger

Rick,

So nice seeing you at Sunset Grill this morning and introducing you to the family. This shot is 500mm F6.3 on the long end of the lens. Usually most zooms have trouble fully extended but I am very pleased with the image sharpness and the lens in general. I have been zooming in via my in camera focus check multiplier and using focus peaking in manual mode to fine tune the focus. Works really well.

I did use the 2X teleconverter on the moon shot at 500mm. This effectively gave me 1000mm and with crop factor 1500mm. Getting into telescope range now :)

It was amazing at this close focus how fast the moon moves across your LCD

barn Swallow

Doug,

please upload something that i wouldn't like. i feel embarrassed to leave comments every time you upload a new set of pictures :P

i think you are good with the news and info as you got the owl shot and the moon shot so successfully. also being proactive is something i need to learn from you. you informed about the super moon but i didnt even think about where i could possibly take the picture from.

anyways, i loooooved the blue and white color from the bird. didn't know that the bird feathers can have such patterns. thanks for sharing

Barn Swallows

Beautiful pictures of the swallows.  Do you mind telling me where they were taken?  Was it in the ravine area behind the Leisure Centre in Aurora?

DougUnderwood's picture

Barn Swallows

Rhodri,

These were taken where the boardwalk in McKenzie Marsh turns into gravel. Keep going till you get to the logs before the concrete path. I was sitting in near the small pond.

Barn Swallows

Thanks, Doug.  I took a walk down there today and found them.  They are beautiful birds.

Moose

Hello Doug

First Thanks for Your Kind words You left about Our chance Meeting, It was Very Nice to Run into You and to Meet Your Family as well.

Ronen Had told Me about You mentioning that on site but it took till today to run across Your post and I had been Looking, some of these posts are getting a bit long in the scroll.

I have My Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II at Gentec again the iris is not working and I am having a love hate relationship with that 7D and at this time the best long lens I have is the 70-300mm F/4-5.6 APO Macro its ok but not at the same time, all I need to do is throw more money at the problem so if and when I get the other lens back and if it is working correctly then I will get a converter for it and see perhaps for the first time with the 7D how this combination works as it has not worked at all well with the aperture not functioning properly ( that is such a nice touch Ronen included Here a spell checker Thanks Ronen )

Anyway Doug I hope You find this to read sometime and as well some were there is someone else posting a picture of You taking a picture of them taking a picture of a Moose and around it goes. Very nice Scene By the way I want to go on a trip to!!! I want to see a Moose in Person.

Hope this finds You well Doug

Regards

Rick

Nice Moose Shot...

Hey Doug,

That moose looks like he's posing for the photographers.  Still, they seem to be rather close...you don't want to get too close to a moose.

I'm assuming you got lots of good photos on your Algonquin long weekend.  The weather was certainly just right.  RG

Field of Phlox

Hi Doug

I like Your Phlox and the lone bush to give it a bit of lonesomeness or the odd Man out but it is not a which one of these things doesn't belong here as it very much belongs right were it is.

Thanks Doug

Rick
