Star Trails Image -- August 24, 2012
Bondi By Moonlight & Startrails Bondi -- August 25, 2012. The Bondi Startrails image is a complete failure. Primarily because of gaps and also because it was fairly hazy when I tried it and the stars were not as visible. This experiment taught me one significant lesson: turn off noise reduction during long exposures. This makes it possible to take more exposures and not waste time (hence causing gaps) between exposures. Any comments or suggestions regarding these images would be much appreciated.

Abandoned House on Kettelby Rd 1

I love this shot - to me it bridges old and new/ modern and nature with the bright blue graffiti on the decrepit house and how the vines outline it. 2 forms of art, with the graffit artist and then your shot :)
Also, if that is your cat - super cute!
Thanks Joanne...

Thanks Joanne...
Actually, there is a bit of a story behind the abondoned house photos. I drove by the place on my way to Kettleby and since I took my camera with me that morning I promised myself I would stop and take a couple of photos on the way back. There are all sorts of warnings to stay off the property but I just figured that I'll take my chances...
I got my camera all set up on a tripod (with the intent of doing a couple of HDR images) and was about to take the pictures. Lo and behold guess what happened; the night before I was working on some images and I had to take the sdhc card out of the camera. It was late at night and I was a bit tired so I forgot to put the card back in the camera. As it turned out I did not have another sdch card with me so I couldn't use my DSLR to take the images.
I almost gave up, but then I remembered that I had my Blackberry Playbook with me. There is a pretty decent camera on that thing (although I had never used it before) so I decided to give it a go. For a camera built into a tablet it did a pretty decent job. I was actually quite impressed with the outcome.
As far as the cat is concerned, it is not mine. I just happened to see it one day on someone's porch and took the image.

Hello Ronen
I like Cottage life dusk and Cottage setting sun, Very nice two out of three ain't bad I do like the other but for the bushes in the foreground I cant get past them.
I have stared at the Cottage life dusk and tried to figure what that most interesting mirror like item is in the image and I must say I am stumped.
anyway thanks Ronen I have appreciated Your image post.
Cheers!!!

Hey Rick,
I took those images in a real hurry and wasn't paying much attention. The bushes and the tree trunk definitely get in the way. Didn't notice how distracting they were until I got home and took a close look at the image.
Still, the color that the setting sun gives the sky is nice.

Ronen,
I love shooting at dusk and will stay out easily 30 minutes past. There is this moment around 10 - 12 minutes after sun down that I really like and have even shot some portraits by turning around from the sunset and using the light hitting my subjects (Family)
Cottage life at Dusk has the best exposure but that damn tree trunk. Bring a chain saw next time :) I'd go for a longer exposure to get more light and then adjust to the left in post.
Great shots.

Hello once again!
I like that tree trunk shadow and all the other shadows that are on that thing in the Cottage life at Dusk image Ronen I was not advocating such radical editing of that scene as I said I liked two out of three and even part of the third so please Ronen don't remove the tree!
Is that a big Rock it is very interesting
Regards
Rick

Hi Rick,
I won't do any radical editing...I think the tree trunk would have worked better if I got a part of the tree in the image. As it is right now it looks like it's cutting the image in two.
The "rock" that you're talking about is not a rock at all. It's actually a canoe turned upside down.

McKenzie Marsh color

Wow, it's just beautiful. When I saw this picture I had to leave a comment.
It has most beautiful blue and orangish tone; the two complimentary colors.
If it really looks like that in real life, I want to know where it is.
It's inspiring, thanks for sharing, Ronen!

Hi Moon,
Thanks, I appreciate the positive comment.
The image is an HDR so I did push the colors a bit with the saturation.
The photo was taken at the McKenzie Marsh around St. John's Side road and Yonge street.

Hi Ronen,
I agree with Moon - this photo is absolutely stunning. I would put it up in my house, I love the rich and vibrant colours.
And its a good thing for phones and tablets so we can be constantly surrounded by cameras!
Algonquin park and Merlin's

Great shots!
I especially like the "trees on the tip". I think I was on the same trail last fall, but can't remember the name of it. Do you know? Algonquin is about an hr from my cottage and I might make a day trip up there this summer. Also loved the effect of the water lily shot. What kind of editing did you do to these shots? I also liked the poppy seed shots. If you open the seed heads when they are ripe there are thousands of little black seeds inside.

Hi Linda,
Thanks for the positive comments.
The "Trees on the Tip" image was taken at the Lookout Trail. It's a 1.9km loop trail. It's a fairly rugged trail and requires quite a bit of climbing. The reward is a magnificent view of Algonquin.
Many of the Algonquin shots were processed using HDR (High Dynamic Range) where 3-4 images of different exposures are combined using software to create a more dynamic image that does not have over or under exposed elements. Too bad that you're not able to come to the July 12 meeting as I will be doing a brief introduction to HDR photography. Regardless, I will try to put something on the website as well in the next little while about the process of HDR.
In any event, enjoy your stay at the cottage and if you manage to go on that day trip to Algonquin make sure to take your camera and post some of your images.
Have a great summer.

Hi Ronen,
I like your Bondy night photos. The Moonlight picture is a peaceful lovely image; what is the light that appears on the Bondy startrailIs on the sky with 80 degrees shift with the stars? My favorite your first try by composition and light treatment. Which settings do you use in the stars images?
