Aurora Public Library Tech and Culture Club

Hi Everyone,

I hope that you’re all well.

I thought that some of you may be interested to know that I started a new club at the Aurora Public Library called Tech and Culture.  The aim of the club is to discuss new and emerging technologies and their impact on culture and identity.  Even though there will be some hands-on type activities, the main goal of the club is to elicit conversation around the existential and moral impact of technology on our day-to-day lives.  Here’s the official poster from the library:

The next meeting will be tomorrow (April 3) between 7-8:45 pm in the Aurora Public Library’s Magna Room.

Hoping to see some of you there.

All the best.

APL Camera Club Reminder -- Monthly Challenge

Hi Everyone,

This is a quick reminder to upload your Monthly Challenge One Light Portrait to the gallery. You are to upload a maximum of two images. The first should be the untouched image right out of the camera, and the second should be the same image but with any post-processing that was done.

Those not at the workshop can also participate by uploading either a self-portrait, or a portrait of someone you know.

Looking forward to seeing your images.

APL Camera Club Meets This Thursday (February 22) at 7:00pm

Hi Everyone,

The APL Camera Club will be meeting this Thursday (February 22) at 7:00pm in the Magna Room of the Aurora Public Library.

SERVER CRASH ANNOUNCMENT

Before I give you more information on the agenda for this Thursday I need to let you know that the camera club's server was down for a few days because of a hard drive malfunction.  Things are back up now, but unfortunately the backup that I used to rebuild the server was from about a month and a half ago, which means that some stuff that was recently uploaded was lost.  Basically all the images uploaded for the February Monthly Challenge will need to be re uploaded.  So if you've already uploaded your images please go back and upload them again.

AGENDA FOR UPCOMING MEETING

The following is the itinerary for the upcoming meeting:

  • Monthly Challenge critique -- One Light Portraiture
  • Rhodri Ford Presentation -- Winter Photography: Tips and Inspiration
  • Ronen Grunberg Presentation -- Spirographs Light Painting

MONTHLY CHALLENGE REMINDER

For the Monthly Challenge you are to upload a maximum of two images.  The first should be the untouched image right out of the camera, and the second should be the same image but with any post-processing that you might have done.

Update on APL Camera Club Meeting January 25, 2018

Hi Everyone,

This is a quick update on uploading images for next month's Monthly Challenge.

So next month's challenge is One Light Portraiture based on the workshop that was done on January 4th.

Basically you are to upload a maximum of two images.  The first should be the untouched image right out of the camera, and the second should be the same image but with any post-processing that you might have done.

If you were not at the workshop but would still like to participate in this Monthly Challenge you can take either a self-portrait, or a portrait of someone you know.  You can use any light source that you have at your disposal with the ultimate goal of getting some interesting lighting on your subject.  Try to avoid flat and monotonous lighting.

If you're not entirely clear on the post-processing workflow, Angela Durante Dukat created four videos that will give you some ideas.  You can find the videos here:

Follow Up -- One Light Portraiture Workshop -- January 4, 2018

Hi everyone,

Thanks for coming to the one-light portraiture workshop. The turnout was terrific and from what I could see people managed to get quite a few great portraits.

Thanks to everyone involved in putting the workshop together (Rick, Rhodri, Bethan, Steve, Angela,) and for making themselves and their equipment available for this workshop.

At this point people should have a whole bunch of images on their camera that they can do some postprocessing on to make them truly excel as portraits. Angela Durante Dukat was kind enough to put together a series of tutorials on how to process these images. You can find these tutorials on the APL camera club website in the video gallery section (They are the first four from the top). Alternatively you can also go to Angela's YouTube page to view the same tutorials.

So using Angela's suggestions try to bring the best out of the images that you captured at the session.  The goal is to edit your favourite images from the session for the critique which will happen at the February 22nd meeting.

The next meeting of the APL Camera Club will be held on January 25.  I will send more information on the planned itinerary in the next couple of weeks.

IMPORTANT NOTICE -- PLEASE READ!

At Thursday's meeting someone forgot a black zip-up sports jacket with white stripes with a 50mm Canon lens in one of the pockets.  It is now in my possession.  If this belongs to you please send me an email so I can arrange to get it back to you.

Cheers,

Ronen
